l o c a l n e w s s a i n t o f t h e m o n t h Founder of the Jesuits St. Ignatius of Loyola Father Kerry Wakulich was ordained to the priesthood and Seminarian Jorge Gómez was ordained to the diaconate by Bishop Edward J. Slattery on May 29 at Holy Family Cathedral. Father Wakulich will serve at St. Thomas More, Bishop Kelley Newly ordained Father Kerry Wakulich will become associate pastor at St. Thomas More in Tulsa, effective July 1. Bishop Edward J. Slattery also has appointed Father Wakulich as a chaplain of Bishop Kelley High School with Father Brian O’Brien, Kelley’s president. Upon his ordination later this month, Deacon Ernesto Cavillo will become an associate pastor at St. Francis Xavier Church and Diocesan Shrine in Tulsa. St. Francis Xavier Associate Pastor Father Leonardo Medina will become director of the Hispanic Apostolate for the Diocese effective July 1. In a May 28 letter, Bishop Slattery told Father Medina that “this as-signment is very important – the Hispanic population throughout the Diocese depends on our providing Mass and sacraments as well as catechesis for both adults and children. You have already proven your dedication and competence as a priest for the past three years. May God continue to fill your heart with His love so that you will expe-rience joy and peace as you serve Him.” Upon then-Father Cavillo’s re-turn from his June 24 ordination in Mexico, Father Medina will take up residence with Father Tim Davison, pastor of Sts. Pe-ter and Paul Church in Tulsa. Father Jeff Polasek, while con-tinuing his service to St. Brigid Church in Tahlequah, will take on the duties of administrator of Holy Cross Parish in Wagoner. Father Festus Maliwa, pastor of St. John Parish in Bartlesville, has been appointed retroac-tively to succeed Father Orencio Mumar as pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Dewey. He will retain his duties at St. John. Father Archie Fernandez, while retaining his duties as pastor of St. James Parish in Bartlesville, also will serve as pastor of St. Catherine Parish in Nowata. Deacon Jorge Gómez, ordained May 29, will serve this summer as deacon at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Cushing, where Father Matt La Chance is pastor. Deacon Gómez is scheduled to be ordained to the priesthood next spring. He was the last of 12 children and born into Spanish nobility. St. Ignatius had a military education and became a solider in 1517. While serving in Pampeluna, he was wounded in the leg by a cannonball, which left him partially crippled for the rest of his life. During his recovery, St. Ignatius read two books: The Golden Legend, a collection of saint biographies, and The Life of Christ by Ludolph the Carthusian. Because of his readings, he took a vow of chastity and planned a pilgrimage. From 1522 to 1523, St. Ignatius lived in a cave. He then took a pilgrimage to Rome and the Holy Land, where he focused on converting Muslims. In 1528, he began studying theology and eventually received his degree. Based on his meditations, prayers and visions, St. Ignatius of Loyola formed the Constitutions of the Society of Jesus, commonly known as the Jesuits. He died July 31, 1556. Why he is a saint: St. Ignatius is commonly known for his Spiritual Exercises,a book of meditations and prayers that are to be experienced for 30 days. He was a defender of the Catholic Church during the Protestant Reformation and was the founder of the Society of Jesus.
